On 29 September, ABLI hosted, as part of the line-up of TechLawFest 2020, a knowledge cafe titled Converging Data Protection Approaches with David N. Alfred, Dr Clarisse Girot, James M., and Mark Parsons, moderated by Mark Fisher.
The panelists noted the trend of convergence in data protection approaches, with requirements on data breach notification and criminal sanctions for misuse of personal data on the rise. Regulators also increasingly have more teeth to their enforcement powers. More laws also entitle individuals to claim compensation for harm suffered as a result of such breaches.
We believe such discussions are timely as regulatory focus on data protection and privacy has increased in the APAC region due to the data implications of Covid-19, and major data breaches have pushed legislators, policymakers and regulators into action.
We thank everyone who joined us for the lunch-hour session and look forward to helping push regional conversations further.
