To what legal regime is ABLI subject regarding the collection of personal data?

The Asian Business Law Institute (ABLI) is a corporation that was formed under Singapore law and has its offices in Singapore. As such, it subject to the Personal Data Protection Act 2012 (Singapore) (PDPA). The PDPA establishes a data protection law that comprises various rules governing the collection, use, disclosure and care of personal data.

Does ABLI collect personal data?

Rarely. ABLI’s activities seldom require the collection of personal data from individuals. As a matter of principle and practice, ABLI attempts to limit the collection of data about an individual to that individual’s business contact information. That is, the individual’s name, position or title, and business email address not solely provided for personal purposes. Such information is generally excluded from the data protection provisions of the PDPA.

In the event that ABLI does collect your personal data (such as your mobile telephone number, personal email address or residential address) ABLI will only do so with your consent. You may request access to, and correction of, any of your personal data that is in ABLI’s possession or is under ABLI’s control by sending an email to [email protected].

What are your internal data protection policies?

As a wholly-owned subsidiary of the Singapore Academy of Law (SAL), ABLI follows SAL’s privacy policy. ABLI does not communicate an individual’s personal data collected by it to SAL without that individual’s consent.

If you register to attend an ABLI event or purchase an ABLI publication through SAL, SAL’s privacy policy will apply.

Do you track information from users of this website?

Yes. Some of the methods that may be used for tracking include, among others:

Log Data

ABLI collects information that your browser sends whenever you visit our website (“Log Data”). This Log Data may include information such as your computer’s Internet Protocol address, browser type, browser version, the pages of our website that you visit, the time and date of your visit, the time spent on those pages and other statistics. In addition, we may use third-party services such as Google Analytics that collect, monitor and analyze this type of information in order to increase our website’s functionality. The information provided by the tracking methods mentioned above includes the country (e.g., Vietnam) and city (e.g., Ho Chi Minh City) from where you are accessing ABLI’s website, whether you are a new user of the website or whether you are a returning user, which pages you accessed and for how long you stayed on ABLI’s website.

The information collected, whether by itself or with other information, does not allow ABLI to identify, contact or locate you.

What do you do with this information?

ABLI uses the information obtained from tracking to help it understand the types of people who are using its website and what content such people are reading. This allows ABLI to make better decisions about the design and content of its website. We may also use the data collected to report to SAL and our funders.

In addition, we may use the information collected to contact you with newsletters, marketing or promotional materials and other information that may be of interest to you. You may opt out of receiving any, or all, of these communications from us by following the unsubscribe link or instructions provided in any email we send.

As mentioned earlier, if you do not wish your data to be collected and used by Google Analytics (when accessing our website or others) or us, you can download an add-on for your web browser.

Can you guarantee the security of the information collected?

As mentioned earlier, ABLI rarely collects personal data and attempts to limit the collection of data about an individual to that individual’s business contact information.

In collecting and using data, we strive to use commercially acceptable means to ensure their security. However, as no method of transmission over the Internet or by electronic means is 100% secure, we cannot guarantee the absolute security of such data.

Does this privacy notice only apply to ABLI’s website?

Yes. Our website contains hyperlinks to websites owned and maintained by third parties, with which we may or may not have a relationship. The data protection and privacy policies and practices of those websites may differ from our policies and practices as set out above.
