Member of ABLI Board of Governors appointed to the SICC

Justice Zhang Yongjian (张勇健法官) from the People’s Republic of China has been appointed as International Judge to the Singapore International Commercial Court (SICC) for an initial one-year term from January 5, 2023 to January 4, 2024.

Justice Zhang served as a Judge of the Supreme People’s Court (SPC) of the People’s Republic of China from Apr 2000, and successively held various senior positions of the SPC between December 2012 and March 2016. In June 2018, Justice Zhang was appointed Senior Judge of the China International Commercial Court. He retired from the Judiciary in 2019.

Justice Zhang has been a member of ABLI’s Board of Governors since 2016, and has been a strong supporter of ABLI’s work, in particular in the field of recognition and enforcement of foreign judgments. In May 2019, Justice Zhang co-authored an article titled New Exploration on Mutual Recognition and Enforcement of Civil and Commercial Judgments by Judicial Organs (司法机关相互承认执行民商事判决的新探索) with Justice Yang Lei of the SPC in which Their Honors suggested that ABLI’s Foreign Judgments project and its outputs be leveraged to “promote signing of memoranda of understanding” given “urgent” need for coordination in the area of foreign judgments recognition and enforcement in the region.
