20th Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law

ABLI’S Foreign Judgments Project was presented during a sponsored lunch session at the 20^th Congress of the International Academy of Comparative Law on 27 July 2018 in Fukuoka.

The session commenced with a 45 minute presentation by the Project Lead, Associate Professor Adeline Chong. During the presentation, information about ABLI and its various projects was given, followed by a detailed explanation of the Foreign Judgments Project. The background leading to the project, its objectives and outputs was presented. In particular, a comparative analysis of the laws of the 15 jurisdictions involved in the study was presented, along with conclusions on the common principles shared and areas of significant differences, with suggestions on how the latter may be overcome.

The presentation was followed by a panel discussion which was chaired by Professor Mary Keyes of Griffith University. Apart from Associate Professor Chong, the other panellists were Professor Elizabeth Aguiling-Pangalangan (University of the Philippines; country reporter for the Philippines), Professor Guo Yujun (Wuhan University; country reporter for China) and Professor Narinder Singh (Maharishi Law School; country reporter for India). The issues discussed by the panellists included whether convergence should be aimed for in this area of the law and if so, how it could best be achieved. Following the panel discussion, the audience had the opportunity to raise questions to the panellists.

The lunch session was attended by approximately 100 persons. A number of persons approached the Project Lead after the session had concluded to congratulate her on the project and to express the view that the work done on the project was important. There were also follow up questions which is indicative of the interest which the project generated amongst the audience.
